Resilient agriculture – A tool for reviving Sri Lankan economy
About the University
The Eastern University, Sri Lanka is a public university in Vantharumoolai, Eastern Province, Sri Lanka. It was established in 1986. The University was preceded by the Batticaloa University College established in 1981, is currently occupying around 10000 students from different communities and different parts of the island. At present, the Eastern University, Sri Lanka has a main campus at Vantharumoolai, Trincomalee Campus at Trincomalee, and the Swami Vipulananda Institute of Aesthetic Studies (SVIAS) at Kallady, with the facilities of Library Network, Centre for Information and Communication Technology, Sports etc. Batticaloa city is the seat of the Eastern University, Sri Lanka and is a major city in the Eastern Province. Batticaloa has a nickname as “Land of the Singing Fish” due to musical sounds that are related to fish or aquatic creatures in the Batticaloa Lagoon. One of the most remarkable richness of Batticaloa district is its 3 lagoons. Batticaloa lagoon is the largest one, more than 50 km long and it opens to the sea. Batticaloa district is bordered on its east side by the Indian ocean, and is, therefore, an ideal place for sea lovers, endowed with around 120 kilometers of sandy beaches and numerous fishing villages. The most famous beaches in the district are definitely Passikudah and Kalkudah beaches, are shallow waters and coral reefs that make them safe areas for bathing even for novice swimmers.
The Faculty of Agriculture was one of the two faculties established in 1986. The vision of our faculty is to offer valuable learning experiences to our students and stimulate a richer and sustainable quality of life for farming society in the Eastern region, the nation and the world. Mission of the faculty is to create a learning community.
About the Symposium
Food security and ensuring safe and nutritious food for all are the major global challenges. The demand for food is projected to increase by over 60% by 2050. However, availability of land and water resources for food production are limited. Global food production is also expected to decrease by 2% each decade for the next century due to climate change. Hence, adoption of new technologies and blending them with indigenous knowledge in food production is vital to produce more food with less land, water, and other inputs resources without harming our environment. In this context, the Faculty of Agriculture, Eastern University, Sri Lanka has decided to organize the 6th National Symposium on Agriculture (NSA-2024) under the theme “Resilient agriculture – A tool for reviving Sri Lankan economy” on 6th March 2024. The NSA-2024 takes the privilege to invite researchers, agriculturists, policy makers, engineers, economists, budding young scientists, students and all other enthusiastic participants to exchange their experiences, novel ideas and research findings in all aspects of agricultural science at this national forum and to discuss practical challenges encountered and solutions to be adopted on resilient agriculture.
